Why Technology?

Technology for life
As teachers, we all strive to develop the youth of today for a stronger tomorrow. Teachers prepare the students in the education system for career opportunities when they are completed school. The students will need to use technology on a regular basis in their life, so why not provide them with the tools necessary that will enhance their learning? Alberta Education is beginning to sway their ideals towards a technology focused curriculum for a better future for our students. It is the educators responsibility to ensure that they stay up to date on technology to provide their students with the best opportunity for an easy transition after their schooling into the real world. |
Student Participation
Students are constantly surrounded by technology in todays world. They are growing up with technology and understand more programs and software than most educators. Students are highly interested in technology, so why not add technology to lessons and instruction to help peak their interest? Adding technology regularly will not only keep students engaged and motivated to learn, but will also increase their willingness to participate in achieving higher grades. Similarly connected to student participation, the results of the study by Rosenfeld and Martinez-Pons (2005) "suggest that when an educational technology course is relevant to students' needs and provides students with modeling, hands-on practice, and continuing support in a collaborative environment, it can lead to competence and future classroom technology use" (p. 151).
Teacher Experience with Technology
There may be some educators out there hesitant to implement technology on a regular basis due partly to their inexperience, and also their hesitation to rely heavily on technology compared to traditional methods of instruction. There may be many obstacles to overcome for some educators and technology may act as a deterrent, but technology can provide so much value to enrich all lessons. Teachers need to have the mindset that technology can enhance learning, because "teachers who believe technology is beneficial for a broader range of instructional purposes, seem to lead their students to use technology more often than teachers who believe technology is beneficial for a narrower variety of purposes" (Miranda & Russell, p. 663, 2012).
Technology is beneficial to meet instructional goals
The implementation of technology can do nothing but benefit educators. The use of technology allows educators to plan meaningful lessons that enable students to have the best chance for success. As educators, we should always put the learners needs first over anything else. Instructional goals can be met in many ways from implementing technology by adding in multiple formats and different types of technology regularly in our planning. Educators should not rely on technology as a crutch, but simply employ technology as a means of communicating effectively with the students while achieving multiple outcomes.
Importance of technology for teaching
There are many different importances of implementing technology into our daily lessons. Educators encounter such diverse learners and such diverse learning needs, that educators need to explore as much usable technology to create an optimal learning space for the students. Each student is different and has different learning styles in which makes an educator closely reflect on the use of technology for the students that need technology to demonstrate their knowledge.
Physical Disabilities - There are students who need technology to learn in the classroom. Students with physical disabilities are at a significant disadvantage when educators do not provide the appropriate technology to accommodate their needs. There are many applications out there that can allow for students with physical disabilities the best opportunity for success.
Visual Disabilities - Technology allows for students with visual disabilities the opportunity to gain knowledge where some other ways wouldn't work. The applications online enable a student that is visually disabled to be provided with the best opportunity to receive material where in some situations it would be very difficult to do so. Technology in this case, is one of the main factors of keeping students with visual disabilities so successful in schools today.
